One of the best AI image generators — stunning photorealistic and artistic images from text prompts.

Midjourney is widely regarded as the gold standard for AI image quality. From a text prompt it produces striking, high-resolution images across nearly any style — photorealistic, cinematic, illustrative, or painterly — with a signature sense of composition and lighting that many rivals still struggle to match. It is run by an independent research lab of the same name, founded by David Holz.
Its edge is aesthetic taste: Midjourney’s default output simply looks more polished than most competitors’ with less prompt fiddling. Newer V6/V7-era models sharpened photorealism, improved text rendering inside images, and added stronger character and style consistency. Control tools like Vary (Region) for targeted edits, pan and zoom to extend a scene, and style references let you steer results precisely.
The historical quirk is that Midjourney launched entirely inside Discord, where you type prompts to a bot. It now offers a proper web app that is far friendlier, though its Discord roots still shape the community. Compared with Stable Diffusion, Midjourney trades open, local, pixel-level control for ease and out-of-the-box beauty.
There is no free tier — a paid plan is required to generate images.
Designers, artists, marketers, concept creators, and anyone who wants the highest visual quality from a text-to-image tool and values aesthetics over granular technical control.
The lack of a free tier makes it costlier to try than tools with free credits, and the Discord heritage can feel unfamiliar at first. For workflows needing exact, repeatable, pixel-level control — or fully local, offline generation — Stable Diffusion or ComfyUI give more precision, even if the default look is less refined.
