Quick take, not a full review Generated from the two reviews · 2026

Which one should you pick?

Pick Mem if this matters most to you: Removes manual filing — AI links and surfaces related notes automatically. Pick Obsidian if this does: All notes stored locally as plain Markdown — full data ownership.

Both are freemium, so price is unlikely to decide it.

We have not fully rated both tools yet, so treat this as a starting point rather than a verdict.

The trade-offs are real on both sides: Mem's biggest limit is that weak for people who prefer manual folder/tag control over their system; Obsidian's is that steeper learning curve than simple note apps like Apple Notes.
