Microsoft's BI platform with Copilot, smart narratives, anomaly detection, and natural-language Q&A.

Power BI is Microsoftโs business intelligence platform for building interactive dashboards and reports from business data. It sits alongside Tableau and Looker as one of the three dominant BI tools, and its biggest advantage is tight integration with the Microsoft ecosystem โ Excel, Azure, SQL Server, and Microsoft 365. Authoring is done in the free Power BI Desktop app, with sharing and collaboration handled through paid cloud tiers.
Its AI capabilities center on Copilot, which can generate report pages, summarize data, and write DAX measures from plain-language prompts. Other AI features are built into the visuals themselves: Smart Narratives write text summaries of a chart, the Q&A visual answers typed questions, anomaly detection flags outliers in time series, and the decomposition tree helps drill into whatโs driving a metric. Copilot and the heavier AI features require Fabric or Premium capacity.
Business analysts and organizations already invested in Microsoft 365 and Azure who need governed, scalable dashboards and want Copilot to speed up report building and analysis.
The full AI experience โ Copilot in particular โ depends on Fabric or Premium capacity, which pushes real costs well above the Pro sticker price. DAX and data modeling carry a genuine learning curve, and teams outside the Microsoft ecosystem often find Tableauโs visualization design or Lookerโs data governance a more natural fit.
