Pi

Pi (short for “personal intelligence”) is a conversational AI from Inflection AI, the startup co-founded by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. It launched in 2023 with a deliberately different goal from ChatGPT: instead of maximizing task output, Pi was designed to be a kind, emotionally intelligent companion for talking things through.

That focus shows in how it behaves. Pi asks follow-up questions, mirrors your tone, and paces a conversation rather than dumping a wall of text. Its voice mode is one of the most natural available, with several distinct voice options that sound calm and unhurried. You can use it on the web, iOS, Android, and through WhatsApp and other messaging channels.

One important caveat: in March 2024 Microsoft hired much of Inflection’s team and Suleyman, and the company shifted toward selling its models to enterprises. Pi still runs, but its long-term roadmap is less certain than that of ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Limitations

Pi is intentionally narrow. It has no file upload, no live web browsing, and no coding or spreadsheet tooling, so for real work ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini are far more capable. It is also not a substitute for professional mental-health care. And given Inflection’s enterprise pivot, there is real uncertainty about how much the consumer product will keep improving.
