Google's multimodal AI assistant — integrated with Search, Gmail, Docs, and the entire Google ecosystem.

Gemini is Google’s flagship AI assistant and the direct rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. It runs on Google’s Gemini model family (the 2.5 Pro and Flash generation as of 2026) and is natively multimodal — it reasons over text, images, audio, and video in one conversation. Its biggest structural advantage is distribution: Gemini is wired into Search, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Android, and Chrome, so for heavy Google users the assistant lives where they already work.
What sets Gemini apart from ChatGPT is that tie to Google’s own data and products — live Search grounding for fresher answers, “Help me write” inside Gmail and Docs, and Gemini responses appearing in Search itself via AI Overviews. It also offers unusually large context windows (up to around a million tokens on the Pro tier), which suits long reports, codebases, and full videos. Developers can build on the same models through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API.
People already inside the Google ecosystem — Workspace users, students, and Android owners — who want an assistant that reaches into their email, docs, and search rather than living in a separate tab.
Much of Gemini’s advantage disappears if you do not use Google apps, where a standalone tool like ChatGPT or Claude may serve you just as well. Google renames and reshuffles its plans and model names frequently, so exact tier names and prices drift — confirm current details before subscribing. In organizations, its data-handling and privacy settings deserve a careful look before feeding it sensitive material.
