Microsoft Copilot is Microsoftโs brand for AI woven across its whole product line, built on OpenAIโs GPT models (the consumer chat currently runs on GPT-4o-class models). It shows up in three main places: the free Copilot chat in Windows 11 and Edge, the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot that lives inside Office apps, and GitHub Copilot for developers. The naming can be confusing because โCopilotโ means something slightly different in each surface.
What sets it apart from standalone ChatGPT is grounding. Microsoft 365 Copilot connects to the Microsoft Graph โ your emails, documents, calendar, and Teams chats โ so it can draft a reply that references last weekโs meeting or summarize a specific SharePoint file. Googleโs competing Gemini for Workspace does the same thing in Docs and Gmail; the choice usually comes down to which office suite your organization already runs.
The consumer side leans on Bing for live web search and DALL-E 3 (via Copilot Designer) for image generation.
Teams and individuals already living in Microsoft 365 who want AI drafting, summarizing, and data analysis without leaving Word, Excel, or Outlook.
The genuinely useful business version stacks on top of an existing 365 subscription, so total cost adds up fast. In practice the in-app suggestions vary in quality โ Excel formula help can miss the mark, and results improve when your files are well organized. If youโre not in the Microsoft ecosystem, plain ChatGPT or Claude often gives a better standalone chat experience for the money.
