Every AI tool listed on AI Briefs that carries a star rating has been assessed by our editorial team against a defined set of criteria. We aim to give you an honest, balanced view — not a sponsored ranking. Tools that pay for listing receive no scoring advantage.
Our scores reflect the experience of a typical non-technical user exploring an AI tool for the first time, as well as the expectations of power users and professionals where applicable.
Scoring Criteria
Each tool is rated out of 5.0, calculated as a weighted average of five core dimensions:
Ease of Use
25% weightHow quickly can a new user get value from the tool? We assess onboarding, UI clarity, prompt guidance, and learning curve. A tool that delivers results within minutes scores higher than one requiring extensive configuration.
Output Quality
30% weightThe most important factor. We test the tool across a range of representative tasks and evaluate the accuracy, creativity, coherence, and usefulness of the results. We compare outputs against competing tools in the same category.
Value for Money
20% weightWe assess whether the tool's pricing is fair relative to what it delivers. Free tiers, usage limits, hidden paywalls, and the generosity of trial periods all factor into this score. A generous free tier can significantly boost this dimension.
Features & Depth
15% weightDoes the tool do what it claims, and does it go beyond the basics? We evaluate the breadth of capabilities, integrations, API access, customisation options, and unique features that differentiate it from the crowd.
Reliability & Trust
10% weightWe assess uptime, response speed, data privacy practices, and how transparent the company is about how its AI works. Tools with clear privacy policies, a known team, and a solid track record score higher here.

Our Review Process
Discovery
We identify tools through submissions, product launches, community feedback, and our own research. Every tool is checked against our listing criteria before evaluation begins.
Hands-On Testing
Our team creates a free or trial account and tests the tool across a standardised set of tasks relevant to its category. We do not rely on vendor-supplied demos or cherry-picked examples.
Scoring
Each reviewer independently scores the five criteria. Scores are combined into a weighted average, rounded to one decimal place, and reviewed against peer tools to ensure consistency.
Publication & Updates
Ratings are published alongside our review notes. We revisit ratings when a tool releases major updates, changes its pricing, or receives significant user feedback that warrants re-evaluation.
Independence & Conflicts of Interest
AI Briefs earns revenue through sponsored listings and affiliate partnerships. However, our editorial ratings are strictly independent. Sponsored tools are labelled as such and receive no scoring advantage. Our team does not accept payment in exchange for higher ratings.
If you believe a rating is inaccurate or outdated, please contact us and we will review it promptly.
